In motorsport, talent often reveals itself early, but Ella Lloyd’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Just a few years ago, she was known for her achievements in showjumping and skiing. Today, she is one of the most exciting young names in racing, carrying the pride of Wales onto the international motorsport stage while representing McLaren as a Development Driver.
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Ella grew up surrounded by sport, discipline, and competitive ambition. Her father, a Paralympic skier who also holds a rallying licence, helped shape a family environment where performance and resilience were part of everyday life. Before racing became her main focus, Ella had already built a strong sporting foundation of her own. She was a decorated showjumper and skier, winning gold at the Welsh Skiing Championship in 2019 and achieving success in equestrian competition with her horse, Elvira.
That background gave her more than just trophies. It gave her balance, courage, focus, and the ability to handle pressure. Those qualities would soon become essential when Ella made the bold move into motor racing.
Unlike many drivers who begin karting at a very young age, Ella entered competitive racing without prior karting experience. In 2022, she joined the Ginetta Junior Championship, stepping into a world that demanded quick adaptation. Her progress was immediate. In her debut season, she finished in the points in 15 of 25 races, showing consistency and racecraft beyond her experience level.
The following year, Ella continued her rise in the Ginetta GT Championship, where she proved she was not simply learning, but competing at a high level. Her performances earned her the vice-champion title, marking her as one of the most promising young drivers in the field.
By 2024, Ella was ready for her next challenge: single-seaters. She made her debut in the Formula Winter Series and quickly made an impression, earning the Female Driver Trophy multiple times. That momentum carried into British F4 with JHR Developments, where she finished 11th overall and recorded 13 points finishes, including four podiums.
Her growing reputation soon reached the F1 Academy stage. Ella joined the grid in Singapore as a Wild Card entry, and instead of simply using the opportunity for experience, she delivered. Finishing in the points in both races, she caught the attention of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, one of the most respected pathways in motorsport.
In October 2024, Ella was officially announced as a McLaren Development Driver. It was a major milestone in a career that had only just begun, and a powerful sign of the belief McLaren had in her potential.

The 2025 season became another important chapter. Competing with Rodin Motorsport in both F1 Academy and British F4, Ella continued to develop as a complete racing driver. She secured multiple podium finishes and claimed her maiden F1 Academy victory in Race 1 of the second round in Jeddah, a defining moment that confirmed her place among the series’ front-runners.
Her progress was not limited to F1 Academy. In 2025, Ella also gained valuable experience with McLaren’s Formula E team. She took part in the Women’s Test at Jarama in Madrid, finishing seventh, before returning for the Berlin Rookie Test. These opportunities gave her exposure to different cars, formats, and levels of professional motorsport, further strengthening her development.
By the end of her rookie season in F1 Academy, Ella had made a clear statement. She finished fourth in the Drivers’ standings and ended the year as the highest-placed rookie. For a driver who had entered racing later than many of her competitors, it was a remarkable achievement.
Now, as she prepares to continue in F1 Academy in 2026, Ella has made her ambitions clear. She is not entering the season simply to gain more experience. She is targeting the championship.

What makes Ella Lloyd’s story so compelling is not only the speed of her rise, but the mindset behind it. She represents a new generation of racers who are versatile, determined, and unafraid to take an unconventional path. From the ski slopes and showjumping arenas of Wales to the circuits of F1 Academy, British F4, and Formula E testing, Ella has shown that excellence can travel across disciplines when it is powered by discipline and belief.
Her journey is still in its early chapters, but the direction is clear. Ella Lloyd is no longer just a promising rookie. She is a McLaren-backed contender, a Welsh talent on the rise, and a driver with the focus to turn potential into championship success.

As 2026 approaches, all eyes will be on Ella Lloyd, not only to see how far she has come, but to witness how far she is ready to go.
