Chris Evans is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Evans last played the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers seemingly brought his story to a definitive close.

Marvel has since confirmed Evans’ return, with the actor appearing in promotional material and footage for the upcoming Avengers film.

Why Did Chris Evans Return?

Evans has revealed that returning as Steve Rogers was not an easy decision.

According to the actor, Marvel presented him with at least a dozen different ideas for bringing Captain America back over several years. He repeatedly declined because he wanted to protect the ending Steve received in Endgame.

Evans eventually changed his mind when the right creative opportunity came along.

A major factor was the return of Robert Downey Jr., who is coming back to the MCU as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, rather than Tony Stark. Evans said learning about Downey’s return suddenly made the new project feel right.

What Happened to Steve Rogers in Endgame?

At the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Steve travels back in time and chooses to live a full life with Peggy Carter.

An elderly Steve eventually appears in the present day and gives his shield to Sam Wilson, passing the Captain America mantle to the next generation.

That ending made Evans hesitant to revisit the character.

For his return to work, there needed to be a compelling reason for Steve Rogers to become involved in the MCU’s latest crisis.

What Is Different About His Return?

Avengers: Doomsday is not simply bringing back the same Captain America fans saw in the Infinity Saga.

The movie will feature Sam Wilson as Captain America, played by Anthony Mackie, while Evans returns as Steve Rogers.

That creates an intriguing dynamic between the former and current holders of the Captain America identity.

Marvel has also teased Steve Rogers in unexpected circumstances, adding mystery around exactly how his story will connect to the film’s larger conflict.

When Does Avengers: Doomsday Release?

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the brothers who previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The movie will bring together an enormous group of Marvel characters, including Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the Fantastic Four and several X-Men characters.

What About Avengers: Secret Wars?

Evans is also expected to have a role in the MCU’s next major crossover, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027.

For Marvel fans, the return of Steve Rogers could therefore be more than a one-film appearance.
