Andrew Garfield Still Wants a Gay Spider-Man to Happen, 13 Years After First Suggesting It
The former Spider-Man star is standing by his longtime idea that anyone should be able to see themselves in the iconic superhero.
The 43-year-old actor portrayed the web-slinging superhero in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel.
Garfield First Suggested a Gay Spider-Man in 2013
During a 2013 interview, Garfield discussed the possibility of changing Peter Parker’s romantic storyline and suggested that MJ could potentially be a man.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking,” Garfield said at the time, explaining that he had even discussed the idea with a Spider-Man producer.
He questioned why Peter Parker couldn’t explore his sexuality and suggested that the character could be attracted to men.
Garfield even proposed Michael B. Jordan as a potential love interest, praising the actor’s charisma and talent.
‘Anyone Can Be in That Suit’
Now, 13 years later, Garfield says he still stands by the sentiment behind those comments.
“It was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about,” Garfield told Entertainment Weekly. “I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit.”
For Garfield, the idea is connected to what makes Spider-Man such a universally relatable character.
He explained that audiences can project themselves into the superhero because the character’s identity is not limited by skin color, gender or sexuality.
Why Garfield Supports the Idea
Garfield said he likes the idea of creating a space where everyone feels represented and included.
To him, the question is simply: Why not allow someone different to wear the Spider-Man suit?
The actor also suggested that strong opposition to the concept can reveal more about the person objecting than about the character itself.
His comments reignite a conversation he first started during his time as Spider-Man, long before discussions about representation became as prominent in superhero franchises.
Shailene Woodley’s Spider-Man Connection
Garfield’s comments also come as fans continue to revisit The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
Shailene Woodley was originally cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her scenes were ultimately removed from the final film.
