Jason Statham’s ‘I Am Not an Actor, Really’ Comments Go Viral Again Years Later

During an appearance on The Jim and Sam Show in April 2017, Statham was asked whether he was ever offered roles that were completely different from the characters he typically plays.

His response was blunt and humorous.

“A mathematician who is going through a bitter divorce? No, I don’t get offered those!” Statham said.

Statham went on to explain that he also wasn’t interested in taking on roles he felt were outside his strengths.

“I only want to do things I think I could do a good job at,” he explained, adding that he didn’t see himself as someone who could easily transform into completely different characters.

“I’m not an actor, really,” Statham said.

He recalled that before entering Hollywood, he worked with jewelry and was a longtime sportsman. According to Statham, he never spent years studying accents or developing the kind of traditional theatrical skills associated with actors.

Instead, he believes he entered the movie business largely because he happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Statham has built his career by leaning into the qualities that made him recognizable in the first place—physicality, intensity and a natural presence in action roles.
