Selena Gomez Responds to Fans Who Want Her to Look Like She Did in 2016

The singer and actress says she has no interest in trying to recreate her appearance from a decade ago and is embracing aging and a more natural approach to beauty.

Selena Gomez is opening up about aging and the continued public fascination with how she looked nearly a decade ago.

The 34-year-old Only Murders in the Building actress and Rare Beauty founder discussed the subject in a new interview with People, reflecting on the attention surrounding photos from her 2016 era.

Gomez acknowledged that she enjoys seeing throwback photos but said some people have become overly focused on recreating the way she looked at the time.

“I got to be honest, the 2016 throwbacks and all of it is so much fun, but people get really intense,” Gomez said.

She joked that some fans seem to want to “freeze” her in that period of her life, adding that she has no intention of trying to maintain the appearance she had at 24.

“I think people always want me to look the way I did, and that’s just not going to happen,” she explained.

Gomez also reflected on what made that period of her life particularly memorable. She described 2016 as a hectic time and joked about the glamorous makeup looks she embraced during that era.

“It was probably more interesting because I’m now chilling, which is great. But it was such a hectic period in my life… of course I had to rock a smoky eye. I was trying to be cool!” she recalled.

Selena Gomez Says She Loves Getting Older

Rather than resisting the changes that come with aging, Gomez said she has learned to appreciate the process.

“I love getting older,” she said.

The singer and actress explained that her perspective on beauty has also evolved, with a greater emphasis on authenticity and natural beauty.

“That’s kind of my whole identity now, is really connecting with just natural beauty,” Gomez said.

She added that physical changes are a natural part of life and encouraged a broader perspective on aging.

“Things are going to change and things are going to sag, but you’re alive…I think age is just a number in many ways,” she said.

Selena Gomez Reflects on Her Younger Sister

Gomez also spoke about her younger sister, Gracie Teefey, and the confidence she sees in her.

The actress said she admires the self-assurance Gracie has at a young age and reflected on how she wishes she had possessed the same level of confidence when she was younger.

Gomez’s comments offer a candid perspective on growing older in the public eye, while making clear that she would rather embrace the person she is today than attempt to recreate an earlier version of herself.
