Te-Sian Shih: Designing Across Cultures With Purpose and Soul

The New York-based designer blends Eastern heritage, Western design thinking, and human experience into globally recognized visual work.

Te-Sian Shih has built a creative identity shaped by cultures, cities, personal experiences, and a belief that meaningful design must go beyond aesthetics.

Originally from Taiwan and now based in New York City, Shih is a visual and branding designer whose international career reflects a distinctive ability to bring Eastern and Western perspectives together. After completing her Master’s degree in Packaging Design at Pratt Institute in New York, she developed a design philosophy influenced by both the structured methodologies of Western design education and the commercial and cultural foundations of her upbringing in Taiwan.

Her work has since earned recognition from prominent international design programs, including Gold at the MUSE Design Awards, Silver at the IDA International Design Awards, and Bronze at the A’ Design Award.

Beyond receiving awards, Shih has also contributed to the international design community as a juror. She has served on judging panels for the U.S. Poster Stellars Poster Design Competition, the World Journal newspaper’s Packaging Drawing Competition in New York City, and the Switzerland Calanca Poster Biennale.

A Global Creative Journey

Shih’s work has traveled across the world, appearing in exhibitions and creative platforms throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Her designs have been invited to appear at the Florence Biennale, Genova Biennale, exhibitions at Belgium City Hall, The Oculus at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Taiwan Orchid Show at Queens Botanical Garden, New York Times Square, ArtExpo New York, Dubai Art Expo, the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, galleries in Paris and London, London Underground stations, and exhibitions in Spain.

These international experiences have become more than professional milestones. They have expanded the cultural vocabulary that informs Shih’s creative process.

Through exhibitions in Europe and recognition from international design organizations, she has developed relationships with creatives and friends throughout the United Kingdom and other European countries. Exposure to their cultures, visual traditions, and perspectives has gradually found its way into her own work.

Where East Meets West

Shih’s design language is deeply connected to her multicultural background.

Her education at Pratt Institute introduced her to Western approaches to layout, branding, conceptual development, and visual strategy. At the same time, her commercial background in Taiwan gave her another perspective on communication and market-oriented design.

She further draws inspiration from Taiwanese Indigenous, Chinese, Japanese, American, British, and European cultural influences.

Rather than treating these references as separate elements, Shih brings them together to create a visual language that feels personal and internationally relevant.

Living in New York City has strengthened this approach. Surrounded by people from different countries, professions, and cultures, she continuously observes how individuals communicate, live, and express themselves. Everyday encounters often become starting points for creative ideas.

For Shih, design is ultimately connected to people.

Giving Design a Soul

At the center of Shih’s philosophy is a simple belief: a successful design must possess a soul.

She believes branding cannot be created through visual trends alone. Every person, business, and organization has a different identity, ambition, story, and audience. Her responsibility as a designer is to understand those differences before translating them into a visual system.

For that reason, her process begins with understanding the client’s needs, market positioning, personality, and long-term brand concept.

The objective is not simply to make something attractive. It is to create an identity that feels authentic and distinctive enough to represent the client in a crowded marketplace.

Shih also draws heavily from her own life experiences. Personal emotions, cultural observations, challenges, and memories frequently become creative material, allowing her work to carry a deeper human dimension.

Designing Hope During a Difficult Moment

One of the clearest examples of this philosophy emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York City became one of the places profoundly affected during the early stages of the crisis. Witnessing the uncertainty and hardship surrounding the city inspired Shih to create a project titled Loving Message.

The work was designed to encourage New Yorkers and people around the world who were facing difficult circumstances to maintain hope, faith, and emotional strength.

What began as a deeply personal response eventually received international recognition. Loving Message won recognition at the Graphis Poster Annual Design Awards and was later presented at the Genova Biennale and other international exhibitions.

For Shih, the project demonstrated how graphic design can communicate something far more powerful than commercial information. Visual communication can also comfort, encourage, connect, and inspire.

Designing for Humanity

As Shih continues developing her international career, her ambition extends beyond awards and exhibitions.

She sees branding and graphic design as tools capable of creating meaningful connections between businesses and the people they hope to reach. At the same time, she believes designers can use their creativity to contribute positively to society.

Her journey from Taiwan to New York, followed by exhibitions across Europe, America, Asia, and the Middle East, has created a creative perspective shaped by many worlds.

Yet the principle behind her work remains consistent.

Design should communicate identity. It should create emotion. It should understand people.

And above all, Te-Sian Shih believes that great design should have a soul.
