Tom Cruise Returns as Cole Trickle in ‘Days of Thunder’ Sequel With Anne Hathaway
Nearly four decades after the original racing drama, Tom Cruise is getting back behind the wheel as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a highly anticipated sequel.
Tom Cruise is returning to one of his most iconic racing roles.
The 64-year-old actor announced on August 29 that he will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in a sequel to the 1990 film Days of Thunder. Anne Hathaway will co-star in the new movie, marking the first time the two actors will appear together on screen.
Tom Cruise Is Back as Cole Trickle
Cruise will once again play Cole Trickle, the talented and ambitious NASCAR driver introduced in the original Days of Thunder.
The 1990 film followed Trickle as he joined a new racing team and faced intense competition on the track. The character was loosely inspired by real-life NASCAR driver Tim Richmond.
Anne Hathaway Joins the Racing Drama
Hathaway is set to play a racecar team owner and engineer, giving her character a different connection to the racing world than Nicole Kidman’s Dr. Claire Lewicki had in the original.
Plot details for the sequel are still being kept under wraps, but Cruise and Hathaway confirmed the project in a promotional video filmed alongside a NASCAR race car.
When Will ‘Days of Thunder 2’ Be Released?
Paramount Pictures has scheduled the sequel for June 2, 2028. The movie is planned for an IMAX theatrical release, with additional premium formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX.
The sequel will arrive almost 40 years after the original Days of Thunder hit theaters.
New Creative Team
Days of Thunder will be directed by Jonathan Levine, with Will Staples writing the screenplay.
Cruise will also produce the film alongside longtime collaborator Jerry Bruckheimer and producer Tommy Harper. Bruckheimer produced the original 1990 movie as well as Cruise’s hugely successful Top Gun: Maverick.

Although the original Days of Thunder received mixed reviews when it was released, the film has developed a loyal following among NASCAR and racing fans over the years.
Now, Cruise is returning to the driver’s seat for another high-speed adventure—this time with Anne Hathaway joining him for a new chapter in Cole Trickle’s story.
