Why ‘Marshals’ Killed Off Dolly in the Season 2 Premiere
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explains the decision to kill off Dolly Weaver and how her tragic fate reflects the consequences surrounding Kayce Dutton.
Marshals opened its second season with a major shock for viewers, killing off fan-favorite character Dolly Weaver during the premiere.
Dolly’s death comes after she travels to Wyoming to help Kayce Dutton locate his kidnapped son. Her involvement ultimately places her in the middle of a confrontation involving her own family, leading to a devastating conclusion.
How Dolly Dies
During the standoff, Dolly’s father, Tom, attempts to escape while being pursued by the U.S. Marshals. The getaway quickly turns deadly when the vehicle rolls over and plunges down a steep hillside.
Although Tom survives the crash, Dolly does not.
Kayce eventually lowers his weapon and chooses not to give Tom an immediate escape from the wreckage. Tom is left alive to confront the consequences of the crash and the death of his own daughter.
Why the Showrunner Made the Decision
Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained that the creative team spent considerable time discussing Dolly’s storyline before deciding to end her journey in the Season 2 premiere.
“We went back and forth about it a lot, trying to figure out the best trajectory for her,” Hudnut told TVLine.
According to Hudnut, Dolly’s death also reinforces a recurring theme surrounding Kayce: people who become closely connected to him often end up facing tragic circumstances.
“In some ways, this is a reminder that people who grow close to Kayce Dutton tend to have tragic outcomes,” Hudnut explained.
Kayce’s Connection to the Tragedy
The decision also plays into Kayce’s own perspective on the destruction surrounding him.
Hudnut said that, in the back of Kayce’s mind, he carries the belief that he brings chaos into the lives of people who become involved with him. However, the showrunner emphasized that Dolly’s fate ultimately resulted from her father’s actions rather than Kayce directly causing her death.
Dolly’s death therefore serves not only as a major emotional turning point for the new season but also as another example of the dangerous consequences that can follow those who become entangled in Kayce’s world.
